The forasacco it is known to anyone who has a dog why it is a danger to these animals, a serious problem that cannot be overlooked. Knowing the symptoms and learning how to act in case it "touches us" to deal with it is important if we love our four-legged friend by taking care of it and not considering it as a living pastime.

The forasacchi they literally stick to the dog's coat, they stick into the skin, even often exploiting the movement of the same animal that alone is not able to get rid of it. The most critical moment is undoubtedly spring: with the heat and the sun, with the awakening nature, even the forasacco shows up on time to threaten our furry friends who play outdoors, without any sense of the danger they run. It is not an animal, the forasacco, for those who do not yet know it, but it is a part of wild grasses, particular because unlike other parts, it has the "vice" of stick to the fur of animals and spread in the environment through their bodies.

Forasacco and dogs: paw

The paws are undoubtedly the part of the body that often comes into contact with these corpuscles for obvious reasons, given that the dog runs and runs outdoors and these small ears can be found, for example, along roadsides. We do not necessarily mean country roads, dirt roads or through fields: these spikelets are even in the city center.

They become more dangerous than ever when they get dry, because they take on an insidious shape and are able to penetrate the skin with great ease because of the shape but also because they are covered with a thick and bristly knurling that makes sure that they do not come out easily. Rather!

Once they are successful in puncture the dog's skin and to enter the living flesh of the animal, they cause a lot of damage, primarily infections that can quickly become serious.

Forasacco and dogs: symptoms

It is not so obvious to notice when our dog comes into contact with one of these flying spikelets because they are small and the animal does not have the gift of speaking to explain what it feels. Moreover, it often does not warn the puncture of the forasacco because it penetrates the skin as the minutes pass, while the dog moves unaware of having an enemy corpuscle on him.

If we pay attention to the dog, we can notice signs and intervene as soon as possible, so that the infection does not get too serious. Redness, the release of pus, the appearance of edema or swelling accompanied by pain these are all indications of the possible presence of a forasacco on our animal.

But when it has penetrated significantly, they also have more serious and obvious symptoms such as continuous sneezing until blood comes out. It is not the case to wait to get to these levels to do something, already if we realize that the dog is constantly licking a precise point of the body, or scratching it regularly, it is better to have a check-up by the vet. A cough may also be suspicious: the forasacco may have gotten into the throat.

Forasacco and dogs: throat

That's right, even in the throat these spikelets can slip in and in this case the resulting infections are even more serious, but symptoms are also usually more evident.

In addition to the throat and legs, the parts of the dog's body most at risk are nose, eyes, ears, mouth. For the legs, the advice is to also check the spaces between the toes, in general it is better to carefully check all these areas with a high probability of forasacco. On the contrary, the perianal and genital areas and the armpits are not at risk for sacking but you never know, better to take a look every now and then, especially in the summer, to see if there are any suspicious redness or swelling.

Forasacco and dogs: ear

The ear, already mentioned in the areas at risk, is one of the most important to check because the forasacco can really cause serious damage in a short time. There is no need to hesitate if our dog seems bothered by something that has entered his ear. Only the veterinarian can intervene in a correct and timely manner, we take the dog for a visit, sometimes it is also necessary to have surgery for the ear, while other times it is possible to extract the forasacco without problems and without anesthetizing the animal.

Forasacco and dogs: what to do

Being fragments of spikes of widespread plants, even in urban green spaces, forasacchi are a widespread and frequent danger to cross. It is therefore better to organize yourself in order to minimize the chances of meeting them. We try not to make the dog run in the grass that is too tall and, when it does, let's check its hair, clean it carefully, especially if it is long and thick.

Occasionally it may be helpful to clip him, on this it is better to discuss with the vet because it depends a lot on the type of dog and the season. Do-it-yourself with the forasacco is not to be excluded a priori, we evaluate with care and common sense. If the spikelet has not actually penetrated the skin, we can try to extract it as long as you have good dexterity and have a calm dog, otherwise it is better not to risk worsening the situation! A medical examination can also be useful to evaluate the presence of residues left by the extracted spikelet.

Forasacco: what they are

The forasacco is in fact the spikelet of the plants of the Graminaceae family, it is not sharp but finely serrated and can also be hairy at the edges. Its color varies, from purple to red and green, depopulated between June and July but can also be in the air in spring.
