Food Matters asked seven experts a simple question: "What foods would you avoid?" Here are some of the revealing answers:
An endocrinologist wouldn't even go near canned tomatoes - cans are coated in a resin that contains BPA, and tomatoes are especially dangerous because the acid in them breaks down BPA in dangerous amounts.
Most ranchers feed cattle grains, corn, and soybeans to fatten them up, even though studies show grass-fed cattle are higher in heart-healthy and anti-inflammatory vitamins, minerals and fats.
The popcorn bags are covered with Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and when heated the compound leaks into the popcorn. This compound has been linked to infertility.
Non-organic potatoes are heavily sprayed with herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides - many potato growers don't eat the potatoes they sell, instead planting their own crops in separate plots, excluding them from chemicals.
Farmed salmon is stored in pools and fed with chicken feathers and pellets. A scientific study on fish contamination showed high levels of carcinogens like DDT and PCBs.
Dairy cows are fed growth hormones to maximize milk production, which results in a higher incidence of udder infection and pus in the milk.

The seven grocery store foods featured by Food Matters are on the list of foods to avoid, by the way, although I wouldn't limit the fruits to avoid to just conventional apples.
I recommend reviewing the Environmental Working Group's Guide to Identifying Pesticides, which lists fruits and vegetables that contain both maximum and minimum amounts of pesticides, as many are more contaminated than apples. After all, you can peel an apple, but with berries, for example, you cannot get rid of pesticides, and many berries are heavily sprayed.
I would also like to add a few more foods to this list so that we will make it the list of the Dirty Twelve Foods you should avoid buying at your local grocery store.
Genetically Modified Foods
Make no mistake about it; genetically modified (GM) or transgenic foods can be one of the most dangerous aspects of our food supply. I recommend avoiding all GM foods.
Since more than 90 percent of all corn grown in the United States is GMO corn, and more than 95 percent of all soy is GMO, this means that ALL processed foods found in your local grocery store do not meet the standard. labeled "USDA Organic" as they likely contain one or more transgenic components.
To avoid genetically modified foods, first memorize the following list of the most well-known and frequently used transgenic crops:
|Soy||Cotton seed||Sugar derived from sugar beets|
To effectively avoid GMO foods, Avoid all products that contain corn, soybeans, canola, and any of their derivatives, unless they are labeled organic.

Please understand that unless you buy all of your organic food, or grow your own vegetables and raise your own livestock, or at least buy all whole foods (even if they are grown in a conventional way) and prepare them at home, it is likely that you are consuming genetically modified foods every day ...
What final impact will these GM foods have on your health? It is still unknown, but the increase in diseases, infertility and birth defects seem to be among the first side effects on the list.
The additional ingredient that is extremely damaging to your health and is present in excess in processed foods, sodas and other sweetened beverages is fructose-It is usually in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
Evidence is accumulating showing that excess sugar, and fructose in particular, is the main factor causing not only obesity, but also chronic and fatal diseases. In fact, I am convinced that fructose is one of the main causes of a great deal of unnecessary suffering as a consequence of poor health and premature death.
Many mainstream health experts argue that sugar and fructose in moderation is perfectly normal and part of a healthy diet.
I couldn't disagree more.
The central problem behind this vigorous objection is that fructose is currently used in almost all processed foods (regardless of whether or not such foods contain sweeteners). Case in point: the main source of calories in the United States it is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in the form of soda!
Now, if you are able to keep your total fructose intake to less than 25 grams per day, then it won't cause you any major health problems. Sadly, while this is theoretically possible, very few people are actually doing this.
If you're still eating the "standard American diet," cutting back on dessert won't make a big difference - in fact, I've written before about how various foods and drinks contain much more sugar than a glazed donut.
Due to the prevalence of HFCS in food and beverages, the average person consumes 1/3 of a pound of sugar EVERY DAY, equivalent to five ounces or 150 grams, half of which is fructose. That's 300 percent more than the amount that will wreak havoc on your biochemistry.
Remember that it is the AVERAGE; many people actually consume more than double that amount.
Once you've made the decision to drastically cut down on sugar and fructose, please don't make the mistake of substituting artificially sweetened foods and beverages. It is important to understand that these are toxic substances that can wreak havoc on your body.
Artificial sweeteners, like fructose, are also very common in processed foods. Aspartame, for example, can be found in more than 6,000 products.
Studies have not only shown that "diet" or diet foods and beverages ruin your body's ability to count calories, increasing the risk of weight gain, but have also been associated with a number of negative health effects. such as intestinal damage, diabetes, brain damage, premature labor and cancer, just to name a few of the more serious consequences. Acesulfame potassium (or acesulfame-K) is another artificial sweetener, which has been linked to kidney tumors.
Diet or Light Water
Pure water is the healthiest drink you can drink. You need water to survive. However, flashy advertising campaigns have managed to turn the essential part of their diet into a disaster… allowing the food and beverage industry to find a way to turn perfectly healthy water into a toxic mixture.
I'm talking about flavored water, "zero calories" or light waters.
For example, the water product that has just entered the market is called MiO, which is a mixture of two artificial sweeteners, three colorants, a preservative, and propylene glycol (PG) - a solvent that can potentially cause cell mutations, and damage. on the skin, liver and kidney, if ingested in sufficiently high quantities.

If you are not yet an avid tag reader, it's time for you to become one of them, why not fall on those smart marketing tactics. Improved waters has become a hugely lucrative business as people have started to phase out soda believing that it is a better alternative.
Avoid being misled!
Because in addition to artificial sweeteners and colors, these improved water products can also contain enormous amounts of sugar and fructose, adding to the many health problems caused by consuming too much fructose.
For example, Glaceau VitaminWater (made by the Coca-Cola company) has a whopping 33 grams of sugar content in each 20-ounce bottle, which is only 6 grams less than a can of Coca-Cola. Also, the type of fructose found in VitaminWater is the worst type - crystalline fructose - which is even more harmful to your health than high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). The crystalline fructose content is 99 percent fructosewhile HFCS content is only 55 percent fructose.
Clearly any type of water unless it is pure PURE water will NOT improve your health and should be avoided entirely.
Lastly, processed meats such as hot dogs, cold cuts, bacon, pepperoni contain dangerous compounds, adding to the list of foods that you should avoid or eliminate altogether. These compounds include:
- Heterocyclic Amines (HCA) - A potent carcinogen, created when meat or fish is cooked at high temperatures.
- Sodium Nitrite - A commonly used preservative and antimicrobial agent that also adds color and flavor to processed and cured meats.
- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): Many processed meats are smoked as part of the curing process, which causes PAHs to form.
- Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE): When food is cooked at high temperatures - including pasteurization or sterilization - the formation of AGEs in the food increases. AGEs build up in your body over time causing oxidative stress, inflammation, and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and kidney disease.
This recommendation is supported by a recent report commissioned by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). The study, which evaluated the results of more than 7,000 clinical studies, was funded by money raised from the general public, so the findings were not influenced by vested interests. It is also the largest review of the evidence ever conducted, confirming the above results: Processed meats increase the risk of cancer, especially bowel cancer, and NO amount of processed meat is "safe."
An earlier analysis by the WCRF found that eating just one hot dog per day increases the risk of developing colon cancer by 20 percent, and other studies have found that consuming processed meats increases the risk of:
- Colon cancer by 50 percent
- Bladder cancer by 59 percent
- Stomach cancer by 38 percent
- Pancreatic cancer by 67 percent
Processed meats can also increase your risk of diabetes by 50 percent, and reduce your lung function and increase your risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). If you still crave or need a hot dog or other processed meats from time to time, you can reduce your risk by:
- Look for "uncured" (untreated or cured) varieties that do not contain nitrates.
- Choose varieties that say 100% meat, 100% chicken, etc. This is the only way to know that the meat comes from a single species and does not include by-products such as (chicken skin, chicken fat or other parts
- Avoid any type of meat that contains monosodium glutamate, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors.
Ideally, you should buy hot dogs and other processed meats from a local small farmer who can tell you exactly what these products contain.
