In this article I introduce you all kinds of dogs from the different points of view that can be considered: breed, size, character, coat, predisposition to play or to hunt, color and other classification criteria and principles.

Dog types based on breed

The first categorization between dog types is obviously based on breed. There International Cynological Federation (FCI) classified 400 different breeds, theNational Body of Italian Dog lovers (ENCI) has divided them into 10 groups, each marked with an identification number and a possible variety code.

To read the ENCI classification with the various groups and varieties, I refer you to our article dedicated to the list of dog breeds presented in alphabetical order and with cards dedicated to each breed.

Dog types based on size

Dog breeds based on size are generally divided into three categories:

  • Small dogs
  • Medium-sized dogs
  • Large dogs

THE small dogs they have a weight between 5 and 10 kg.

Some examples of small dog breeds are:

  • Poodle
  • Pug
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  • Jack Russell Terrier
  • Shih Tzu
  • Volpino Italiano
  • Yorkshire Terrier

Within the small dogs are also identified "Extra Small" or "Toy" dogs, with a average weight less than 5 Kg.

Some examples of extra small dog breeds I'm:

  • Toy Poodle
  • Bolognese
  • Chihuahua
  • Chin
  • Russian Toy

Instead they are defined medium sized dogs those with a average weight varying between 11 and 25 kg.

A large number of dog breeds fall into this category, for example, among the most widespread in Italy we mention:

  • Beagle Harrier
  • Bulldog
  • Chow Chow
  • Cirneco dell’Etna
  • English Cocker Spaniel
  • Lagotto Romagnolo
  • Afghan Hound
  • Italian Hound and short coat
  • Shiba Inu
  • Siberian Husky
  • Welsh Corgi

The large or "maxi" dog breeds
refer to adult specimens with a average weight over 25 kg.

Among the best known, by way of example, we point out:

  • Mountain Dog of Flanders
  • Czechoslovakian wolfdog
  • Maremma Sheepdog
  • Dalmatian
  • Dobermann
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Schnauzer
  • Spinone Italiano
  • Weimaraner

Types of dogs based on character

Just like us humans, each dog has its own specific character and each generalization can be risky or misleading.

However, it is possible to indicate breeds that have established characteristics and tendencies, sometimes direct consequences of their evolutionary path.

We can therefore report for example dog breeds suitable for children, in the sense of being not aggressive at all, patient and predisposed to play. Here are some of them:

  • Great Dane
  • Bearder Collie
  • Boxer
  • Golden Retriever
  • Maltese
  • Pinscher

Types of hunting dog

In this case, the discussion becomes a little more complex because within the various types of dog breeds suitable for hunting it is necessary to make further distinctions between:

  1. Pointing dogs: refers to those dogs that, after having identified the wild prey, freeze at the tip or stop indicating its presence to the hunter. Breeds of this type are for example: the English pointer, the English Setter and Italian Bracco.
  2. Retrievers: they are dogs that retrieve game after it has been killed by the hunter. They fall into this type of dogs Golden Retriever.
  3. Dogs to follow or to follow it is a type of hunting dog used to track down and chase wild animals, especially furred game, and push it towards hunters. The Balkan Hound, the Hound of the Apennines, the Posavatz Hound and the Beagle Harrier.
  4. Den dogs: these are dogs selected over the years to be small and strong in order to easily enter the burrows of wild animals such as badgers or foxes, so as to flush them out, allowing the hunter to kill them. Types of these breeds are Fox Terrier and the Dachshund.
  5. Blood or trace dogs: they are dogs with a very developed sense of smell, used in the search for injured game, thanks to their ability to follow a blood trace, hence their name. Types of breeds of this group are the Bloodhound, the Westphalian Hound and the German Hound.

Types of dogs by color

Color is only one of the elements used to describe a particular breed. However, it is possible that a person decides to choose his dog based on the color, in most cases white.

Dogs with white fur are for example the Bishon Maltese and the White poodle, the Bedlington Terrier, the Coton de Tulear, lo Japanese Spitz, the Bull Terrier and the Puli.

The other colors, including the black, they can take on different shades and are almost never uniform. The Poodle or the Newfoundland they can be "almost totally" black.

The Labrador Retriever it can be considered totally brown even if with shades of different intensity.
